Rosacea Skin Care

How to Care for Your Skin if You Have Rosacea

Rosacea is a benign skin condition that occurs when the skin becomes flushed and sensitive. Many people with rosacea report red, pimple-like bumps as well as broken capillaries (small blood vessels). The skin is usually extremely sensitive. Dry eyes may be reported as well.

Rosacea is a common disorder among people with light or fair skin. It usually does not progress to other parts of the body, nor is it dangerous, but many people are extremely self-conscious about the facial discoloration that typifies rosacea. If you have rosacea, there are some skin care techniques that may help you treat and conceal the condition.

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #1: Use Plenty of Sunscreen

People with fair skin tend to be sensitive to the sun anyway, and people with Rosacea are doubly so. Therefore, use a high SPF sunscreen whenever you are planning to spend any time outside. This includes winter activities (e.g., skiing, ice skating) as well as summer activities (e.g., hiking, swimming, gardening, etc.).

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #2: Avoid Perfumed Products

Perfumed products may irritate your skin and cause further redness, so it's better to avoid them. Seek out products that are water-based and free of abrasive materials. If any product you use is causing increased wetness, stinging, or burning, discontinue use of it.

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #3: Avoid Hot Water

Wash your face with water that is cool or room temperature. Don't scrub at the affected areas, as this will only cause further inflammation. Pat your face dry with a soft towel, or better yet, let it air dry. Don't use rough towels, loofah sponges, etc.

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #4: Don't Get Overheated

Cool temperatures are best for Rosacea sufferers. It's also important to stay well-hydrated, as this promotes the general health of the skin.

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #5: Use Green or Yellow Tinted Camouflage Makeup

It sounds like an outrageous idea, but the green or yellow coloring will actually help conceal the red patches of skin. Larenim Mineral Makeup offers people with rosacea an all-natural soft green concealer called Hocus-Pocus. Bobbi Brown also offers an excellent line of yellow-based foundations.

Rosacea Skin Care Tip #6: Consult a Dermatologist

Rosacea can't be cured, but there are several techniques a dermatologist can use to control it including topical medications, oral medications, laser therapy, etc. Rather than a "standard" treatment, therapies are based on each patient's unique condition, needs, and circumstances. If you are troubled by rosacea, see a dermatologist as soon as possible and start getting some relief.
